Rust Belt 950

An inland/offshore sail, paddle & oar race from Chicago, IL to Buffalo, NY

Summer 2026

Let's make this happen!

The Rust Belt 950

Nord Coast is proud to be the Founding Sponsor to the Great Lakes Expeditionary Club and its first race: The Rust Belt 950.

Inspired by the motor-free Race to Alaska and Everglades Challenge, we think the Great Lakes needs its own epic sail, paddle, & oar powered race.

How far can you go on the Great Lakes without entering a lock & dam? How about Chicago to Buffalo?

Proposed Design/Rules (far from set in stone):

Start: Chicago, IL

Finish: Buffalo, NY

Prize:

First Place: All you can eat wings and beer as Buffalo's famous Anchor Bar

Second Place: Six months free jelly of the month club

Two Stages:

Shakedown cruise from Chicago to Sheboygan (~130 miles)

Sheboygan to Buffalo (~820 miles)

Two Divisions:

Inshore: Small craft staying within 5 miles of shore

Offshore: Large craft and possibly team flotillas

Unsupported, but outside assistance allowed at pre-specified provisioning spots. Sheboygan, Mackinaw City, and Port Huron (it’s a long race after all)

The Great Lakes Expeditionary Club is forming a 501(c)7 this spring and developing a race planning committee.
